7 lessons on creative strategy for new founders and entrepreneurs
I've been building creatively driven businesses for about a decade now. Here's what I wish someone had told me when I was starting out.
1. Prioritize action over perfection
Nine times out of ten, launching with an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) is better than waiting for "the perfect time." It rarely exists. Real-world experience and quick customer feedback will teach you more than endless planning or polishing ever could. Just ship it.
2. Invest wisely
You might think saving every penny is important at the beginning. In some cases, it is. But excessive frugality can actually cost you more in the long run. Strategic spending upfront saves you headaches and expenses later. Spend on equipment and people first, then focus on scaling.
3. Target higher-value customers
Over time, you'll realize it's often just as easy to attract a $10,000 customer as it is a $1,000 one. Aim higher and price your services with confidence. Your pricing is a signal of your value. Don't underestimate what you're worth.
4. Embrace the non-scalable
Not every business needs to be a unicorn to be successful. And having a "lifestyle" business isn't a bad thing. In fact, most people I know with a lifestyle business are very happy, both personally and professionally.
5. Simplify your offerings
Too many choices can overwhelm potential customers. My agency experience taught me that a streamlined, well-curated selection of products or services can actually boost sales and simplify your operations. Focus on what you do best.
6. Create value before sales
Trust is the currency of business. Build trust first by giving away valuable content. Once you've earned it, guiding potential customers to your offerings becomes much easier.
7. Be prepared to evolve
As your business grows, you might need to change direction or even let go of certain customers. This is a sign of progress, not failure.
You don't need a perfect plan to get started. Turn the key and hit the gas: the road will teach you how to drive.
FAQ
What is creative strategy for entrepreneurs?
Creative strategy for entrepreneurs is the set of intentional decisions that shapes how a business develops and stands out, covering what to build, who to target, how to price, where to invest, and when to change direction. It's less about artistic creativity and more about applying original thinking to business problems instead of just copying what everyone else does.
Should new founders launch before their product is perfect?
Yes. Launching with an MVP is almost always better than waiting. Real users will teach you more in a week than months of internal planning ever could. The perfect time to launch rarely exists, and every day you wait is a day without the customer feedback you need to actually improve.
Why should entrepreneurs target higher-value customers?
Landing a $10,000 client often takes the same effort as landing a $1,000 one, but the economics are completely different. Higher-value clients tend to have clearer problems, bigger budgets, and more respect for expertise. Pricing with confidence signals your value and filters in the right people, which makes the work better and the relationships easier.
Why do too many product or service offerings hurt sales?
Too many options creates paralysis. Buyers get lost in comparisons and don't commit. A focused, curated selection makes it easier for the right person to choose. It also simplifies your own operations, which usually means better quality on everything you actually do offer.
How important is trust before making a sale?
Trust is everything in a knowledge or service business. If you build trust first by sharing genuinely useful content and showing what you know, the sales conversation gets a lot easier. Once someone trusts you, pointing them toward a paid offering feels natural. Without that trust, everything is a hard sell.
